Mika Hayashi — The Graceful Guide Who Colors Life with Kimono

Based in Kanagawa, Mika Hayashi runs the Kimono Culture School, where she works as a dresser and instructor, gently guiding people through the world of kimono. From beginners to experienced wearers, she teaches a wide range of dressing techniques for yukata, hanhaba obi, Nagoya obi, fukuro obi, and furisode, always with care and attention.

For those who say, “I want to try wearing kimono, but I’m nervous” or “I used to learn but have forgotten how”, Hayashi offers personalized lessons that help each person rediscover the charm of kimono at their own pace.

After the dressing session, she also provides posing guidance for kimono portraits. With her motto, “If you dress beautifully, let yourself be photographed beautifully!”, she helps students capture their elegant kimono in photographs.

In 2020, she placed in the Top 8 at Mrs. Nadeshiko Japan and won the Kimono Beauty Award. She is also a certified Nadeshiko Japan instructor, actively promoting traditional dress culture. Drawing on her background in Japanese dance (Umemoto-ryu), her lessons highlight the beauty of refined movements, bringing out each student’s inner radiance.

This summer, she won the Grand Prix at the Yukata Award 2025 Kanagawa Tournament. Next year, she is scheduled to appear as a model for the ceremonial twelve-layered kimono (jūnihitoe).

“I want to bring kimono out of the wardrobe and let them shine in everyday life.” Through her work, Mika Hayashi is expanding a culture where kimono become a way to showcase each person’s individuality and beauty.
