Kobe-based membership study space GIFT is pioneering a groundbreaking initiative, the “1 Minute = 1 Grain Project,” which directly links individual learning to community welfare.
The concept is simple yet powerful: every minute of study equals one grain of rice. GIFT purchases rice directly from partnering local farmers who support the initiative, and delivers it to children’s cafeterias. So far, the project has provided the equivalent of around 400 rice balls to children in need.
For learners, this creates a tangible sense that their personal effort benefits someone else, strengthening their motivation and deepening awareness of social issues. One student remarked, “Knowing my study time helps others pushes me to go one more hour.” A recipient at a children’s cafeteria shared:
“Recently, there’s been so much gloomy news about rice and how both farmers and citizens are struggling. Eating rice from this initiative, grown by Agrico and powered by students’ effort, felt warm and full of meaning. I could really sense the care behind it.”
Beyond providing meals, the project fosters a culture of mutual support through food, and the “education × food × community welfare” model has been recognized as a new framework with potential global impact. Increasingly, local businesses are joining in support, creating a collaborative ecosystem around GIFT’s vision.
At the heart of the initiative lies GIFT’s purpose: “to create a world where children can study without worrying about their next meal.” Looking ahead, GIFT aims to scale this altruistic learning model from Kobe to communities worldwide, bridging food and education to inspire a more sustainable and compassionate society.
