Spreading Compassion: Breast Cancer Survivor Akane Nakamura of Re.Born Association Promotes “Undergoing Cancer Treatment Mark” to Address Invisible Struggles

The Re.Born Association, an incorporated non-profit organization led by breast cancer survivor and peer counselor Akane Nakamura, is intensifying its efforts to communicate the “invisible struggles of treatment” to society under the theme, “Toward a Compassionate Society Born from Understanding Cancer.”

Based in Hiroshima City, Hiroshima Prefecture, Re.Born centers its activities on popularizing the “Undergoing Cancer Treatment Mark,” a symbol conceptualized by Ms. Nakamura based on her own experience with breast cancer. Through this mark, the association aims to create a society where people notice “invisible difficulties,” fostering a chain reaction of empathy and building a world where cancer survivors, their families, and supporters can live with peace of mind.

Key Initiatives and Recent Topics

To expand the visibility of the “Undergoing Cancer Treatment Mark” nationwide, Re.Born launched a crowdfunding campaign in June 2025. This represents a crucial step toward establishing a mechanism where cancer patients struggling with unseen anxieties can discreetly connect and share reassurance and hope.

Recent developments also include the launch of its official website the start of a supporting membership system (with a free campaign for the first year), and the preparation for the “ReBond Community” (scheduled to launch in Spring 2026) this winter to facilitate deeper interaction, reinforcing the organization’s foundation.

In parallel with promoting the mark, Re.Born is engaged in awareness ribbon activities, lectures, market events (marches), and projects that support the “rebirth of the mind, body, and Japanese culture.” The ultimate goal is to expand the circle of “Re.Born” (Rebirth) beyond the scope of the traditional Pink Ribbon movement.

The Vision of CEO Akane Nakamura

The Re.Born Association is driven by the desire to create a gentler society by making the emotional and physical burden of cancer and its treatment, which goes beyond visible changes, more tangible, thereby deepening public understanding. The organization’s reach is expanding from Hiroshima to include nationwide and overseas online outreach, drawing significant attention to its future progress.
