[TOKYO] Keiko Nakajima, a breast cancer survivor who underwent a mastectomy in 2022, is spearheading a new initiative to promote the early detection of the disease through peer support and awareness campaigns. Drawing on her own experience, Ms. Nakajima, who works as a specialist dedicated to “turning anxiety into assurance,” is focused on boosting Japan’s stagnant breast cancer screening rate, which currently hovers around 48%.
Overcoming Barriers of Pain and Time
Ms. Nakajima is actively introducing and selling the “Saliva Scan Test Breast Cancer Risk Testing Kit,” provided by Mirtel Co., Ltd. This kit offers a non-invasive alternative to traditional screening methods, allowing users to assess their breast cancer risk simply by collecting a saliva sample at home, thereby eliminating the pain of mammography and the time commitment of a hospital visit.
“Over 100,000 people contract breast cancer annually in Japan, and approximately 15,000 lose their lives. While early detection makes the disease highly curable, many women skip screenings due to reasons like ‘pain’ or being ‘too busy,'” Ms. Nakajima explains, highlighting the critical issue.
Combining Peer Support with Awareness
As a certified Pink Ribbon Advisor, Ms. Nakajima utilizes her main Instagram account (@keiko_healing) to provide emotional support and address the concerns of patients and their families.
Simultaneously, through her awareness account (@ouchi.de.nyugan), she introduces this user-friendly testing kit. Her goal is to lower the psychological and physical barriers to screening, encouraging more people to take the “critical first step to protecting their lives.”
Ms. Nakajima states, “I hope this initiative will lead to early detection for many people and contribute to reducing the number of breast cancer fatalities,” as she continues her multifaceted support efforts.
