KOTO, a calligrapher known for infusing a soul into characters, has continued her rigorous creative work while enduring chemotherapy and a mastectomy following her breast cancer diagnosis in March 2025.
KOTO is an artist who adheres to the belief of “pouring her heart into every single line so that a pulse can be heard and warmth can be felt from the characters.” She works in a style that carefully listens to the unique stories, wishes, and episodes of each client, translating those feelings into her calligraphy.
Elevating “Life” and “Existence” into Art
The recent diagnosis and start of treatment have brought a new depth to KOTO’s artistic expression. With a strong will that “there is always something that can be done,” even when physical actions are limited, the experience has become a catalyst for her to deeply contemplate “living,” “life,” and “the body (breasts).”
By publicly sharing her journey, KOTO has connected with many individuals who share similar anxieties, worries, and struggles. She is dedicated to creating works that embrace these people and deliver power and love to them. Notably, her unique perspective as a breast cancer survivor has led her to create pieces that utilize breast motifs.

• Shodo Taiken (Calligraphy Workshops) for self-reflection and putting one’s inner voice into words.
• Design of shop logos and names for business cards.

• To continue activities that encourage people to “live authentically, joyfully, and become energized” through her works.
• To help people realize through her workshops that “the act of writing begins with introspection and self-discovery.”
• Her dream is to bring her calligraphy and artwork to the world, culminating in a Calligraphy Performance in New York’s Times Square.
KOTO’s work transcends the boundaries of traditional calligraphy, positioning itself as an expressive art form that offers courage and hope to those facing life’s challenges. Her activities are expected to garner increasing attention.
