Waka Sakurai, an outpatient nurse and dedicated community volunteer, has been named a finalist for Mrs. Universe Japan 2026. At 60 years old, Sakurai is capturing hearts across the nation not just for her elegance, but for a life story defined by transformation and the courage to start anew.
A Journey Rooted in Love and Service
Sakurai’s path to the stage was forged through significant personal challenges. Her life took a pivotal turn when her daughter developed a disability during junior high school. This experience ignited a passion for caregiving within Sakurai, leading her to enroll in nursing school at the age of 40. After seven years of rigorous service in a hospital ward, she transitioned to her current role as an outpatient nurse.
Even outside of her professional duties, Sakurai remains deeply committed to social welfare. She actively participates in several community initiatives, including:
• Supporting facilities for the elderly.
• Volunteering at “Children’s Cafeterias” to combat youth food insecurity.
• Performing in choir groups that visit those in need of comfort.
Shining in Every Circumstance
Embodying her personal motto, “Shining in every circumstance,” Sakurai viewed the Mrs. Universe pageant as an opportunity to demonstrate that it is never too late to pursue a dream. Her recent activities as a finalist included intensive training sessions in etiquette, global protocol, and stage walking.
Upon receiving her official finalist sash, Sakurai expressed deep gratitude for the experience, noting that the journey is about co-creating a better future alongside her fellow contestants. By sharing her smile and her history of overcoming adversity, she aims to inspire others to find their own light, regardless of their age or environment.
