Hisayo Matsuno, a 54-year-old resident of Yamanashi Prefecture and a master of traditional Japanese attire, has emerged as a finalist for the Mrs. Universe Japan 2026 pageant. Known online as Madame M, Matsuno is a certified “Washo Shihan” or master instructor of kimono, reflecting her deep passion for Japanese cultural heritage.
Her journey to the stage is one of personal liberation and resilience. For over two decades, she describes her life as being dedicated entirely to the needs of her family and others, often prioritizing the support of those around her over her own personal ambitions.
Choosing to step into the spotlight at this stage of her life represents a significant shift from her self-described identity as an ordinary housewife. In a recent statement, Matsuno shared that after living half of her life for everyone else, she has decided to finally “choose herself.” She emphasizes that her participation is not merely about winning a crown, but about reclaiming her identity and standing as the protagonist of her own story.
By sharing her transition from the domestic sphere to the international pageant stage, Matsuno aims to inspire others who may feel it is too late to pursue their own dreams. She views this challenge as a way to shine a light on her own potential while continuing to honor her roots in the traditional arts of Japan.
