NEW YORK — In the high-octane world of international fashion, where visual perfection is often the only currency, one Japanese model is shattering glass ceilings and visual barriers alike. Chiharu Abe, a visionary creator and professional model from Oita Prefecture, has become a symbol of unyielding determination after her second consecutive appearance at New York Fashion Week (NYFW).
Her journey to the world’s most prestigious runways did not begin in a studio, but in the field of social welfare. For years, Abe served her community as a certified care worker and social worker. Leading a healthy life until the age of 32, she was suddenly confronted with a life-altering diagnosis of macular degeneration. As her condition progressed, necessitating the use of a white cane and the issuance of a physical disability certificate, Abe reached a turning point that would redefine her destiny.
Rather than retreating, she pivoted toward the spotlight. At 40, she joined the regional modeling agency J-mix, where she spent three years honing her craft while simultaneously gaining expertise in preventive medicine and aesthetics. Her transition was not without hardship; as her vision continued to decline, she was forced to temporarily step away from the industry to work under disability-certified employment.
The catalyst for her global ascent arrived last year. After training under an international model and passing a rigorous audition, Abe set her sights on the United States. In September 2025, she made her international debut at NYFW, followed by a triumphant return to the New York stage in February 2026. Her presence was so impactful that she has already received offers from local organizers for upcoming seasons.
Abe’s mission extends far beyond the clothes she wears. As the CEO of Chiharu Create Office, she balances her role as a digital creator with her advocacy for preventive medicine. Through her strides on the runway, she aims to prove that disability does not dictate capability.
I continue to model because I want to convey that there are things you can achieve even with a disability, Abe stated. I hope that by sharing my story, more people will find the courage to pursue their own paths.
Chiharu Abe is no longer just a model representing Japan; she is a global ambassador for the strength of the human spirit, proving that the most important vision is the one you hold for yourself.
